A Bittersweet Resolution: Guilty Plea Brings Closure in Tragic 2022 Birmingham Sidewalk Slaying

The man accused in his death, 25-year-old Darrius Vashon McCray, recently entered a guilty plea, bringing an end to a legal chapter that has spanned more than two years.

McCray, who was originally staring down the very serious charge of capital murder, ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. This decision, accepted as part of a plea agreement, means he'll serve 10 years behind bars. Birmingham police and fire rescue teams responded to the scene, but tragically, Lewis was pronounced dead right there. It was a shocking incident that, as you can imagine, sent ripples through the neighborhood, prompting a swift and determined investigation by local authorities.

Just five days after that heartbreaking discovery, investigators identified and apprehended Darrius Vashon McCray as a suspect. He was taken into custody on January 18, 2022.
