7 new movies and TV shows to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend (January 5)

Greetings, and Happy New Year! As we dive into the first weekend of 2024, several exciting new movies and TV shows await us in the world of at-home entertainment. After 2023's thrilling end with Rebel Moon, Saltburn, and Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the momentum continues with Netflix leading the pack with four (yes, four!) must-watch recommendations. Additionally, subscribers of Prime Video and Max won't be left out, as they have the gripping new thriller Foe and the nostalgia-inducing documentary Time Bomb Y2K available for their viewing pleasure. We've curated a list of seven prime new movies and TV shows to binge-watch on Netflix, Prime Video, Max, and more this weekend.

Netflix seems to have a penchant for Harlan Coben's adaptations. Their latest addition, Fool Me Once, inspired by Coben's 2016 namesake novel, is now available for streaming. This British thriller, delivered in an eight-episode run, follows a widowed single mother (Michelle Keegan) dealing with her murdered husband's (Richard Armitage) inexplicable return to her life. Despite the critique for being “convoluted”, “over the top” and “implausible", Fool Me Once, featuring Joanna Lumley, Joe Armstrong, and Jade Anouka, can be a great pick for a brain-off few hours of entertainment.

Paul Mescal's captivating performance in Foe on Prime Video proves to be exciting for his fans despite his generally understated approach to acting. In this Black Mirror-esque rendition of Iain Reid's 2018 novel, Mescal and Saoirse Ronan play a married couple disrupted by a stranger's shocking news. Despite critique of Foe as “a familiar slab of sci-fi", Ronan and Mescal's performances are worthy of praise.

Dan Levy, the Schitt's Creek alum, takes center stage and debuts as a full-length feature director in the Netflix movie Good Grief. This comedy-drama, also starring Ruth Negga and Himesh Patel, is now available for streaming.

Featuring an all-Asian cast led by Michelle Yeoh and Justin Chien, Netflix's latest gangster drama The Brothers Sun is also up for streaming. This dark comedy-action series revolves around a gangster from Taipei who must protect his family in America after his father, a triad leader, is assassinated.

The Spanish language survival drama, Society of the Snow, based on the true story of the 1972 Andes plane crash, is now available for streaming on Netflix. This powerful retelling was Spain's official submission for the 2023 Oscars.

This week’s documentary recommendation on Max is Time Bomb Y2K, which delves into the chaos concerning the 1999 computer malfunction often referred to as the year 2000 problem. This one is also streaming on Sky and NOW TV for viewers in the UK.

Finally, the 81st Golden Globes are set to air this Sunday at 8pm ET / 5pm PT (or 1am GMT the next day in the UK) and will be streamed on Paramount Plus. Although the buzz around the Globe has dwindled recently, this year's nominations include an unprecedentedly diverse and international array of competitors. The awards show will be available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
