2 MBTA trolleys become disabled trying to move stopped trolley, agency says

Trolley service on the Mattapan Line is not running for the remainder of Monday after two trolleys wound up becoming disabled while trying to move another trolley that was already stopped on the tracks, according to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. An MBTA spokesperson said at about 6:50 a.m.

Monday, a Mattapan Line trolley became disabled at Butler Station — which is near the intersection of Butler and Branchfield streets — due to a mechanical issue. Another trolley was dispatched to the area with the plan to have it push the disabled train to the yard to be fixed, but the trolley was unable to do so and became disabled.

A third trolley was then sent to push the two other disabled trains back to the yard, but that third trolley was also unable to do so and became disabled. The MBTA spokesperson said that at about 10:15 a.m., carhouse personnel were able to move the three disabled trains to the yard for the issue to be investigated and repaired.

Shuttle buses are currently replacing Mattapan Line trolley service, which runs between the Ashmont and Mattapan stations, for the remainder of the day. MBTA riders can click here for the most up to date service information..
